QUESTION:
Is it possible to do a network installation where the program files are stored on each workstation and only the data files are stored on the network?
ANSWER:
Yes, it is possible to store the program files on each workstation and the data files on the network. There are three easy ways to do this.
- If the program has not yet been installed, do the following.
- Run the network installation on each workstation and choose a local hard drive destination instead of a network hard drive destination. The installer may warn you that you are not choosing a network location. Disregard this warning and proceed with the installation. After the installation is complete, run the workstation installer(s) on each workstation. The student program workstation installer and the CMS workstation installer will be located on each computer's local hard drive. During the workstation installations, choose a network location for the student data.
- Run the network installation properly and install the program files to a network hard drive. Now, the product folder can be copied from the network onto each workstation. Once this process has been completed, delete the product folder from the network and run the workstation installer(s) on each workstation. The student program workstation installer and the CMS workstation installer will be located on each computer's local hard drive. During the workstation installations, choose a network location for the student data.
- If the program has been installed, copy the program files from the server onto each workstation's local hard drive. Then modify the preference files for each workstation so that they point to the correct location of the program files. Instructions for this are given for the following versions of the following products*:
| Product Version | | Abbreviation |
| Larson's Algebra 1 | 1.0x, 1.1x | lms |
| Larson's Algebra 1 with Review | 1.0x, 1.1x | a1r |
| Larson's Elementary Math | 2.2x, 2.3x | lem |
| Larson's Intermediate Math | 2.2x | lim |
| Larson's Matemáticas Saltarinas | 2.1x | mat |
| Larson's Prealgebra | 2.0x, 2.1x | lms |
- Move the program files from the server to local workstations.
- Locate and open the product folder on the server. This folder is entitled with the name of the product.
- Open the folder entitled "xprog," where "x" represents the product abbreviation. For example, "lemprog" indicates Larson's Elementary Math The abbreviations for the other programs are listed above.
- Copy the "xprog" folder from the server onto the local hard drive of each workstation. It is recommended that this folder is copied to the same location on each computer (e.g., C:\xprog or C:\Program Files\xprog).
- Modify the preference files on the local workstations.
- Change the preference file for the student program workstations.
- Locate and open the product folder on the local hard drive (this folder is entitled with the name of the product).
- Open the folder entitled "prefs."
- Open the preferences file. This file can be opened with a text editor.
- The line "gExtDataPath" or "gPath" contains the path to the program files. Modify this path so that it points to the correct location of the program files which are now located on the local hard drive.
In Larson's Elementary Math and Larson's Matemáticas Saltarinas, the "gPath" must point to the particular movies folder for the particular grade, for example, "gStat=C:\lemprog\lemprog_k\movies\" or "gStat=Mac Hard Drive:Applications:matprog:lemprog_1:movies:". For the other products, the "gExtDataPath" must point to the "xprog" folder.
- For Larson's Algebra 1, Larson's Algebra 1 with Review, Larson's Intermediate Math, , or Larson's Prealgebra, the CMS preferences file must also be changed.
- Locate and open the product CMS folder on the local hard drive. This folder is entitled with the name of the product followed by "CMS". For example, "Larson's Intermediate Math CMS" indicates Larson's Intermediate Math.
- Open the folder entitled "prefs."
- Open the CMS preferences file. This file can be opened with a text editor.
- The line "gExtDataPath" contains the path to the program files. Modify this path so that it points to the correct location of the program files which are located on the local hard drive.
