QUESTION:
When I try to use the Rebuild Index feature, it never finishes. What's going on?
SYMPTOM:
- The Rebuild Index feature does not finish.
ANSWER:
A corrupt student file may be the cause. The Rebuild Index feature will not finish when there are corrupt student data files on your server. Student data files can become corrupt for a number of reasons. For example, a communication error between a client computer and the server could cause a student's file to become corrupt. Files can also be corrupted if a teacher makes changes in the Classroom Management System (CMS) while students are logged on to the student program.
Corrupt student data files must be located and deleted because a student is not able to successfully use the program with a corrupt data file. Unfortunately, all student data will be lost for each student file that is deleted. Use the instructions below to locate and remove corrupt student data files.
- Locate the student data which is stored on the server in a folder entitled "lmsindex.
- Open one of the folders in the "lmsindex" folder. Continue to open folders until the student data files are located. Student data file names consist of a combination of letters from the first and last name of the student. These files have file extensions that consist of three digits. The following are examples of student names and their corresponding data filenames.
| Student Name in Program | Student Data Filename |
| Brown, Ross | BrowRoss.723 |
| Maria Lopez | MariLope.459 |
| White, Fiona | WhiFion.044 |
- Look at the size of each file. If any file is 0kb in size, then the file is corrupt. Delete all such files.
- Repeat steps 2 and 3 until all 0kb files are located and deleted.
- Make sure there are no students working in the program.
- Log on to the CMS and click on Rebuild Index. If the rebuild still does not complete, a corrupt student data file still exists.
- Make a copy of the index folder and save this copy in a secure location.
- Create a folder entitled "temp" in the same location as the original index folder.
- Move all files and folders from the original index folder to the "temp" folder.
- Copy one folder that contains student files from the "temp" folder and paste it into the original index folder. Be sure to put folders back into the index folder in the same directory structure that they were originally. To view the original directory structure, open the copy of the index folder.
- Log on to the CMS and click on Rebuild Index.
- If the rebuild is successful, repeat steps 10 and 11 with another folder. If the rebuild is not successful, one or more corrupt files exist in the last folder that was placed in the original index folder.
- Remove all student data files from the folder containing the corrupt file(s).
- Locate that folder in the "temp" folder.
- Copy one student data file from that folder and paste it in the folder within the original index folder.
- Log on to the CMS and click on Rebuild Index.
- If the rebuild is successful, repeat steps 18 and 19 with the next file. If the rebuild is not successful, the last data file added is corrupt. Delete the last data file that was added to the folder. Delete this data file from both the "temp" folder and the copy of the index. Repeat steps 18 and 19 for the remainder of the files in the folder.
- Repeat steps 10 - 17 until all corrupt data files are identified and removed.
- Once all files and folders have been replaced in the original index, log on to the CMS and click on Rebuild Index.
- At this point, there should be no issues with rebuilding the index. Once the error has been eradicated, delete the temp folder. The copy of the original index folder may be kept as a back-up.
