ISSUE:
Using the program causes the error message, "Network is busy."

SYMPTOMS:

RESOLUTION:

  1. This error often occurs when users do not have enough permissions (rights) to the student index folder. To determine whether this is the cause, log on to the workstation as an administrative user. Log on to the application which caused the error. If the error no longer occurs, the other user does not have enough permissions to run the program. Contact your systems administrator to request that all students be given read and write permissions to the student data folder on the network. Teachers need read, write, create, and delete permissions to this folder. The name of the folder is "xindex", where "x" is the program's abbreviation. A list of the abbreviations for each software title is given below.
    • A1R - Larson's Algebra 1 with Review
    • LEM - Larson's Elementary Math
    • EAA - Larson's Excel @ Algebra
    • LIM - Larson's Intermediate Math
    • MAT - Larson's Matemáticas Saltarinas
    • MSM - Larson's Middle School Math
    • LMS - Larson's Prealgebra and Larson's Algebra 1
Use the links below to find out how to set and change user permissions.

  2. Sometimes added security software can cause a problem, even if permissions to particular files and folders appear to be correct. To determine if security software may be an issue, disable it, and log on to the CMS. If the error message no longer occurs, ask your network administrator to review and change the security settings to allow the student program and CMS to access necessary program files on the network.
  3. Corrupt student data files can cause this error.
    1. Determine if this is the cause.
      1. Locate the index folder on the server. Find the path that the workstation is using to find the student data.
        1. Locate and open the "filename.ini" or "filenamePreferences" file located on the local hard drive, where "filename" is the name of the preference file. The path to the student data is located after "gStatPath=" or "gIndexFilePath=".
          • Windows® users -
            1. Double-click the "My Computer" icon on the desktop.
            2. Navigate to the CMS folder. If the default location was used during installation, the CMS folder will be at the following location: "C:\Program Files\Larson's x CMS", where "C" is the local hard drive and "x" is the product's name.
            3. Navigate to the "prefs" folder.
            4. Open the "filename.ini".
          • Macintosh® users -
            1. On the desktop, double-click the icon of the drive partition to which the program was installed.
            2. Navigate to the CMS folder.
            3. Open the "filenamePreferences" file.
        2. Follow the student data path that was located in step a to find the student data folder on the server.
          • Windows® users -
            1. Double-click the "My Computer" icon on the desktop.
            2. Locate the drive letter as indicated in the student data path.
            3. Open each of the folders listed in the order in which they appear in the student data path.
          • Macintosh® users -
            1. On the desktop, double-click the icon of the sharepoint to which the program was installed.
            2. Open each of the folders listed in the order in which they appear in the student data path.
      2. Make a copy of the index folder and place the copy in a safe location.
      3. Delete all files and subfolders in the original index folder.
      4. Log on to the CMS.
      5. Rebuild the index. (If necessary, create a teacher first.)
      6. Create a student.
      7. If the error no longer occurs, there is a corrupt student data file.
    2. If a corrupt student data file is the cause, delete the original index folder.
    3. Copy and paste the copy into the location from which the original was just deleted.
    4. Open one of the folders in the index folder. Continue to open folders until the student data files are located. Student data file names consist of a combination of letters from the first and last name of the student. These files have file extensions that consist of three digits. The following are examples of student names and their corresponding data filenames.

Student Name in ProgramStudent Data Filename
      Brown, RossBrowRoss.723
      Maria LopezMariLope.459
      White, FionaWhiFion.044
    5. Look at the size of each file. If any file is 0kb in size, then it means the file is corrupt. Delete all such files.
    6. Repeat steps d and e until all 0kb size files are located and deleted.
    7. Make sure there are no students working in the program.
    8. Log on to the CMS and then click on Rebuild Index.
    9. Repeat the action that lead to the Director Player error. If the error message still occurs, a corrupt student data file still exists.
    10. Make a copy of the index folder and save this copy in a secure location.
    11. Create a folder entitled "temp" in the same location as the original index folder.
    12. Move all files and folders from the original index folder to the "temp" folder.
    13. Copy one folder that contains student files from the "temp" folder and paste it into the original index folder. Be sure to put folders back into the index folder in the same directory structure that they were originally. To view the original directory structure, open the copy of the index folder.
    14. Log on to the CMS and then click on Rebuild Index.
    15. Repeat the action that lead to the Director Player error.
    16. If no error occurs, repeat steps m through o with another folder. If the error occurs, one or more corrupt files exist in the last folder that was placed in the original index folder.
    17. Remove all student data files from the folder containing the corrupt file(s).
    18. Locate that folder in the "temp" folder.
    19. Copy one student data file from that folder and paste it in the folder within the original index folder.
    20. Log on to the CMS and then click on Rebuild Index.
    21. Repeat the action that lead to the error.
    22. If the error does not occur, repeat steps p through s with the next file. If the error occurs, the last data file added is corrupt. Delete the last data file that was added to the folder. Delete this data file from both the "temp" folder and the copy of the index. Repeat steps p through s for the remainder of the files in the folder.
    23. Repeat steps m through v until all corrupt data files are identified and removed.
    24. Once all files and folders have been replaced in the original index, log on to the CMS and then click on Rebuild Index.
    25. Repeat the action that lead to the error. At this point, there should be no errors. Once you are satisfied that the error has been eradicated, delete the temp folder. You may wish to keep a copy of the original index folder be kept as a back-up.
